With the new year and Spring semester, I'm sure many of you have goals that you'd like to accomplish. Whether you're working for better grades, trying to get into shape, or trying to eat healthier meals.

The Manning School of Business also has a few things we're trying to accomplish. Our department is rapidly growing, and we'd like to involve our students in any way possible!

NEW FACEBOOK PAGE!

As the heading says, we have a new Facebook page! As most of you probably know by now, we are no longer the College of Management. Due to the great amount of generosity of Robert Manning and his wife, we have changed our name to the "Manning School of Business." Signs around campus and on the UML website have already been updated.

Student Activities and Involvement

The Manning School of Business truly cares about your education and your college experience. That is why we are currently making an effort to make the college life fun!

This semester, we'd like to create some sort of annual event for students. Whether it's a concert, movie night, dance, etc., we know that this will make the semester more enjoyable. (Especially since the weather may not be too great in February/March)

As for the type of event we will hold, we are accepting all ideas. There is a poll on the Facebook page that will allow us to gather input from you. If you do NOT have a Facebook page, feel free to shoot me an e-mail! ( Matthew_lawson1@student.uml.edu ) You may also leave a comment on this blog entry.

There are many other things I'd like to talk about, but I will mention them in following blog entries.

COM Facebook Logo Contest!

The College of Management is holding a contest for COM students! The winner of the contest will be awarded a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card.

Contest

Using Microsoft paint, Adobe Photoshop, or any other photo editing software, participants will create a new Facebook College of Management Logo. This logo should have the current UMass Lowell logo. It can be downloaded from the COM Facebook page,(Click on the profile picture, and there will be a link to download.) or saved from the following:

Rules

According to Facebook, profile pictures must be larger than 180 pixels wide.
Entries must contain UMass Lowell Logo. (Doesn't have to be centered. Be creative!)
Entries must look professional and appropriate
Entries must be submitted by 8:00PM on Monday, September 19th . Feel free to submit it earlier!
Entries are to be e-mailed to Matthew_Lawson1@student.uml.edu

The winner agrees that their logo will become property of UMass Lowell and may be reproduced at any time and used in any way. No further rewards, beyond the stated prize will be given to the winner. Students who are employed by the UMass Lowell or the College of Management are not eligible for this contest. This contest is for Undergraduate COM students ONLY!

UML's new Transfer Coordinator

UML's College of Management is pleased to announce a new service for transfer students! Brooke Hargreaves-Heald has taken the position of Transfer Coordinator. Her job is to advise future transfer students as well as currently enrolled transfer students. She can also refer to appropriate University resources, including those related to finances, enrollment and student services.

Did you know that the College of Management runs two computer labs as well as a student lounge?

These computer labs are located on the second floor of Pasteur Hall in rooms 205 and 207. (You will need your student I.D to gain entrance!)

As a COM student, it would be a great idea to use these COM areas. They're excellent places to study as well as finish your homework. The student lounge is also a great place to work on group projects!

Robert Manning's graduation speech

This past weekend, UMass Lowell held Commencement for the class of 2011. This event was absolutely amazing. There was excitement in the air as students, staff, and family took their seats inside of the Tsongas Center.

Although all of the speakers were incredible, one of the speakers stood out to me the most. Robert Manning is a COM Alumni, and is currently the CEO for Boston-based MFS Investments. Mr. Manning spoke about how he rose to the top, and he also spoke of how to become a success out in the real world.

Below is the video of his speech. I suggest watching it, because he makes a lot of great suggestions to students and graduates. (In my opinion, his most helpful point was that about expecting the unexpected.)

Robert and Donna Manning have recently invested $5,000,000 to the upcoming Robert Manning School of Business here at UMass Lowell.

Smart Start Orientation

If you've been accepted to UMass Lowell, you must sign up and attend orientation! At orientation, you will learn the ways of a UML student, meet Advisors, and meet other students! ( I'm still friends with people I met at orientation!)

For the College of Management, there are a few specific dates which you may register.

Cooperative Educational Opportunities

Cooperative Education comes to the College of Management!

Beginning in Fall 2011 COM students will have the opportunity be part of an academically integrated cooperative education program. The first cohort of 30 students will be enrolling in the one-credit Professional Development Seminar which will provide students with the necessary structure, resources and support to successfully secure and engage in their first co-op work experience. Students will choose between 3 or 6 month co-ops, gain a competitive edge in the job market and earn a salary while on co-op which can assist in offsetting college expenses.

Co-op exposes students to the real world of work and to career options while promoting a sense of independence and professional maturity. It also increases opportunities for career positions following graduation. A 2010 Research Brief from the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University reported that internship and co-ops are replacing the traditional starting job that most new college graduates entered just five years ago.

Transfer Application Deadlines

Application for the Fall semester: July 1

Please note that this deadline is a priority deadline meaning that we would like for you to get your application in before this date to ensure a timely decision. However, we will still gladly accept applications with official transcripts after this date and encourage any student who wishes to apply to do so until the first week of classes. Finally, course availability during the beginning of the semester may impact the student's ability to register for his/her preferred courses.

Classes are filling quickly so please get your deposit in as soon as possible!

Dear students, transfer students, or future students,

Welcome to Management Media! From this day forward, this will be a blog dedicated to transfer students looking to join UMass Lowell's College of Management.

With the help of Frank Andrews (Associate Dean; College of Management), I will update this page frequently with important information on the College of Management. I will also write about current events, advice to students, and information on helpful departments at UMass Lowell.

My personal goal is to make this a fun blog for you to read. As you will notice in future posts, I don't like to write in a "robotic" voice. I'm a student, and I wouldn't be interested in reading something that sounds like a textbook!

So if you're a current COM student, a transfer student, or are looking to join the UMass Lowell community, I strongly suggest you visit this blog regularly! You never know what you might learn.
